Inflation in Ghana hit almost 30% in June.
According to information made public by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) on Wednesday, Ghana’s inflation rate increased to 29.8 percent in June from 27.6 percent a month earlier.
The government statistician, Samuel Kobina Annim, stated at the monthly news conference that the June inflation rate was the highest figure since December 2003 and far above the Bank of Ghana’s goal range of 6 to 10 percent.
More than half of the 307 goods had inflation rates higher than the national average, and at least 97 of those items were either non-food or locally produced, according to Annim.
On June 28 and 29, a youth organization called “Arise Ghana” organized a two-day street demonstration to protest the difficulties and high cost of living in the West African nation.
A nationwide indefinite strike by teachers in public schools also started on July 4 after failed negotiations with the administration over cost-of-living allowances.
