In Dakar, the capital of Senegal, severe flooding on Friday caused at least one fatality and one serious injury, according to a police officer.

Intensified downpours are typical during Senegal’s rainy season, which lasts from July to October. In Dakar, flooding occurs frequently during this time. Senegal is a semi-arid nation with flat-roofed homes and sandy roads that are not well prepared for rain.

Recent weeks have seen particularly heavy downpours.

According to the national civil aviation and meteorological agency, similar events occurred on July 20 in Dakar, where 84 millimeters (3.3 inches) of rain were recorded in just two hours (ANACIM).

Between 9 am and 3 pm on Friday, 126 millimeters of rain were recorded.

According to ANACIM, rainfall counts as “extreme” when it exceeds 50 millimeters.
