At least 52 injured and 16 dead as opposing groups clash in Libya.

At least 16 people were killed and 52 were injured as armed groups faithful to Libya’s rival governments continued to fight in Tripoli and Misurata, the country’s competing capitals.

According to multiple sources, one of the armed groups detained a fighter from the other, sparking violence in the capital.

According to AFP, the 444 Brigade intervened on Friday to mediate a truce, sending its forces into a buffer zone before they, too, came under fire.

The fighting in Tripoli started on Thursday and continued on Friday. On Saturday, violence erupted in Misurata, a coastal city about 200 kilometers to the east, prompting the US government to warn against further escalation.

On Friday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed concern about the clashes and urged all Libyans to do everything in their power to preserve the country’s “fragile stability at this critical time.”
