- The families calls for justice
The grieving South African families’ sadness was noticeable. They had gathered in Soweto on Thursday for a memorial service for the 16 people killed in a mass shooting over the weekend.
The grieving relatives demanded justice under a marquee erected meters away from the tavern where the incident occurred.
“How many more lives must we sacrifice?” This is my brother; he has a family and a wife. His family has no one else on whom to rely. Our request to the government is that those responsible for the shooting be apprehended before we hold our brother’s funeral. “
The police minister announced on Monday that a manhunt for five suspects in the Soweto shooting had been launched. Ruby Mathang, an ANC member, assured the bereaved families that the government had heeded their pleas: “The leadership present has heard everything you’ve said.” They have heard your anguish. They must ensure that those involved in the shooting are punished, that they are punished.
To avoid a repeat of the tragedy and to halt the rampant crime wave sweeping South Africa, activists have urged the government to restrict the availability of firearms.
