Security officials reported on Monday that a bus accident that occurred in Kenya’s Central Province on Sunday has now claimed the lives of 33 people.

According to a number of different Kenyan media outlets, the incident occurred on Sunday night as the bus was making its way from Meru to the coastal city of Mombasa.

The Modern Coast bus took a wrong turn and fell 40 meters into the river after leaving the Nithi Bridge.

Initial investigations suggested that the bus’s brakes may have failed, making it difficult for the driver to turn the vehicle properly on the bridge’s sharp bend.

Nobert Komora, the county commissioner for Tharaka Nithi, announced that 10 people had survived the collision while also confirming the fatalities. However, he issued a warning that the death toll might increase given that some survivors had suffered significant injuries.

Over 60 people have reportedly died in crashes in Kenya in the last month alone, which has seen an increase in fatal road accidents in recent weeks.

To prevent more accidents in the East African nation, Kenya Police spokesman Bruno Shioso earlier this month urged adherence to traffic laws. He declared that authorities would be more vigilant in containing reckless drivers.

The National Police Service will continue enforcing the Traffic Act in a bid to ensure compliance with the requirements of the law urging Kenyans to remain vigilant to avoid such unfortunate incidents,” said Shioso.
